The earliest evidence of boxing dates back to Egypt, 3,000 BC. Boxing can also originate from ancient Greece when it was introduced to the Olympic Games in the late 7th century BC. In fact, during these times, soft leather thongs were used to bind boxers’ hands and forearms for protection.
These leather thongs were later replaced for what was known as a cestus — gloves studded with metal which were used in Rome. Unfortunately, boxing matches often ended in death because of these gloves.
With that said, as time went on and the use of swords became less common, the sport later resurfaced in England in the early 1500s in the form of bare-knuckle boxing, also referred to as prizefighting. The first bare-knuckle match was documented in England in 1681 with the first English bare-knuckle champion, James Figg in 1719. Around the same time, the term “boxing” started being used.
There were no written rules in the early days of boxing, no weight divisions or round limits, and no referee, so boxing during those times was pretty chaotic. The first set of boxing rules, known as Broughton’s rules, were introduced in 1743 by boxing champion Jack Broughton. With these rules, hitting a fighter when he’s down and hitting below the waist were prohibited. Broughton also encouraged the use of mufflers — a padded bandage/mitten. These later gave rise to the London Prize Ring Rules that remain in effect till this day, which prohibit butting, gouging, scratching, kicking, biting and so on. Eventually the Marquess of Queensberry rules were drafted in 1867 for amateur championships in different weight groups.
That being said, many fighters struggled to get boxing recognised as a legitimate sport as it was outlawed in England and most of the United States throughout the 19th and 20th century. This was until influential promoters like Tex Rickard and popular champions like John L. Sullivan aided in legitimising boxing — and from there the rest is history.
Boxing associations popped up all over the world, and with those, thousands upon thousands of fans. Boxing then eventually made its way to Sportsbooks and sports betting.
Formerly known as the National Boxing Association, the World Boxing Association (WBA) is one of the oldest of four major organisations which sanction professional boxing matches alongside the WBC, IBF and WBO. The WBA is a seriously prestigious association, so much so that the title of world champion is awarded at a professional level. This organisation was founded in 1921 in the US by 13 state representatives including the NBA, and is recognised by the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF).
The World Boxing Council forms part of the four oldest boxing organisations that sanction professional boxing bouts along with the WBA, IBF and WBO. Many notable fighters were recognised as WBC champions, as this organisation has sanctioned many high-profile bouts. Each of these four organisations recognise each other’s calibre as they each have decades of history to legitimise them. The WBC has nine regional governing bodies, including the North American Boxing Federation (NABF), the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF), the EBU and the African Boxing Council (ABC).
The International Boxing Federation, formerly known as the USB-I, is also one of the four major organisations recognised by the International Boxing Hall of Fame. While it featured many heavy hitters in its time, the IBF received a huge amount of recognition and credibility when Larry Holmes fought James "Bonecrusher" Smith to defend his USBA-I Heavyweight title on November 11, 1984. Since then, the IBF has continued to grow on a global scale.
The World Boxing Organisation is the fourth largest boxing association in this list that is recognised by the Boxing Hall of Fame. The WBO has been awarding the prestigious title “Super Champion'' since the early 2000s, to boxers like Anthony Joshua, Wladimir Klitschko, Oleksandr Usyk, Joe Calzaghe and more.
Apart from knowing what boxing events are occurring currently, one of the first steps into boxing betting is knowing what sort of betting options you’ll have — knowing what kind of bets are available is just as important as knowing when and where to place them. Let’s take a look at common boxing betting options offered by most Sportsbooks.
A moneyline bet is one of the most popular bets you’ll find and also one of the easiest to place. When placing a moneyline bet, this means wagering on the boxer you think will win the match. It is very simple and straightforward, so it serves as a good starting point to amateur bettors.
A parlay bet covers multiple outcomes on the same bet and so, is often referred to as an accumulator or combo bet. For example, one of the most common parlay bets to be placed includes picking the winner of several fights. The only kicker is that each outcome has to be correct in order to win the final payout. But, with big risk may come bigger rewards.
A draw bet lies on the rare side of betting options as draws in boxing don’t occur very often. If no fighter knocks out, the match will head to the judges table where three judges decide on a winner according to their scores. In some cases though, the judges may score the fight a draw. You may wonder why bettors wager on this outcome in the first place if it’s so rare, but it is for that very reason bettors find it more appealing as it potentially offers great payouts.
Each boxing match features a set number of rounds — generally 10 to 12. With the over/under bet, bettors can bet on whether the match will go over the set number of rounds, or under. For example, if there are 10 rounds in one match, betting on the match ending below those 10 rounds will be an under bet. This goes vice versa for an over bet.
Round bets act similarly to a moneyline bet but also offer much more variety. While you can bet on the fighter you think will win the round, you can also wager on which round you think the fight will finish in. These sort of bets are typical to many Sportsbooks and often offer pretty good odds. A Fight to Go the Distance bet is also quite common as it involves wagering on whether the fight will last the full number of rounds or not.
Proposition bets can add additional entertainment to the match as it involves betting on whether you think something will happen or not. Like betting on whether a fighter will be knocked out for instance. Proposition bets are fairly flexible and enjoyed by most bettors.
