While Call of Duty hasn’t yet reached the same prominence in esports betting as CS:GO and Rainbow Six Siege, this first-person shooter is certainly making its mark on the industry. With the recent formation of the competitive Call of Duty League, sportsbooks around the globe are picking up on the hype and adding Call of Duty betting markets on the latest tournaments. Interested in learning more about CoD betting, history and major events? Stick around, we’ll break it down for you!
Call of Duty is a first-person shooter published by Activision, and is part of an extended franchise that spans over 30 titles on consoles and PCs. First released in 2003 as a World War II-themed game, Call of Duty has seen many changes and settings since then. Over the years, the game has been developed by Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games, as well as other developers in spin-off and handheld games. CoD’s most recent title, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, was released on 13 November, 2020, and is a much-needed breath of revival to the franchise. Before you get started on Call of Duty online betting, let’s have a quick look at the game’s history and current competitive league.
The Call of Duty series was originally centred around World War II, with four titles released between 2003 and 2017. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released in 2007 and was the first CoD set in the modern day, which proved to be incredibly successful and created the Modern Warfare sub-series. Four more Modern Warfare titles were released, including a remaster of the original.
As Treyarch was working on its last World War II-based game in 2008, the team kept their eyes on the top of the food chain — what’s next for Call of Duty? The answer was Black Ops, a new Call of Duty sub-series that remains the most successful game in the franchise, with over 30 million copies sold since its release. Call of Duty: Black Ops became the face of the franchise, and the 2020 release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War reinvigorated the franchise and attracted millions of new players and fans alike. To date, the entire CoD series has sold over 400 millions copies, which earned it the Guiness World Record of the best-selling first-person shooter game series. Call of Duty is also the most successful video game franchise created in the US and the third highest-grossing franchise of all time.
Today, the game is gradually building up its presence on the competitive esports scene. After the rise and fall of the Call of Duty World League (CWL), the game’s only competitive league is now the Call of Duty League (CDL) launched in 2020. The newly formed league features the world’s greatest Call of Duty players representing 12 teams across four nations, all battling for the coveted Championship title.
Atlanta Faze, Dallas Empire, Florida Mutineers, London Royal Ravens, Los Angeles Guerrillas, Los Angeles Thieves, Minnesota Rokkr, New York Subliners, Optic Chicago, Paris Legion, Seattle Surge and Toronto Ultra.
All twelve participating teams represent the United States, United Kingdom, France and Canada, and are the organisation’s permanent partners. With spot buy-ins of $25 million per team, the CDL has all the funding it needs to succeed on the competitive esports scene. All sportsbooks covering Call of Duty tournaments will showcase CDL with decent Call of Duty odds; if you’re interested in Call of Duty betting, CDL is really the only event you should keep your eyes on.
The league plays similar to North American professional sports leagues, with all teams competing in scheduled games against one another in a bid for a spot in the season’s playoffs. Each match between two teams is played in best-of-five bouts, depending on the game mode and map. The season is divided into two splits — spring and summer — which culminates in the Championship Weekend.
The CDL uses three multiplayer modes in the 2021 season: Search & Destroy, Hardpoint and Control. The game will be played in Cold War, as opposed to Modern Warfare in previous seasons.
Search & Destroy — One team attempts to plant an explosive and defend it at one of two control points. The second team’s objective is to eliminate the bomb team and to deactivate the device in case of detonation.
Hardpoint — In Hardpoint, a rotational control point appears on the map and teams vie for control over the location. The longer they stay on the point, the more points they will earn.
Control — One team attempts to capture two points on the map while the second team defends them. The round will end when the attackers capture both points within the allotted time, when the defenders outlast them and the time expires, or when either of the teams downs the enemy 30 times.
Call of Duty Challengers is the amateur division of competitive CoD, filled with up-and-coming talent on the scene. The Challengers events were held offline, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, and in accordance to CDL events. Don’t underestimate this league based on its amateur status, the season offers a massive $1,000,000 prize pool and awards Pro points based on the player’s placement in tournaments. With every Challenger vying for a spot on one of the CDL teams and a hefty prize pool, the stakes in these competitions are high. Unfortunately, not many sportsbooks are picking up on the lucrativeness — but keep your eyes peeled for Call of Duty betting markets and odds on Challengers games in the future!
The 2021 Call of Duty season is split into five stages, each ending with a Major Tournament. During each stage, the teams will be split into groups via a draft system, and every team will compete in homestand events. The finals of each events will put teams from opposing groups head to head, giving the teams a chance to earn CDL points. At the end of the season the top eight teams, by CDL point ranking, will continue to the playoffs to compete for the CDL Championship title.
