FUTSAL HISTORY

Futsal is a relatively young sport, established when Juan Carlos Ceriani — a teacher in Uruguay — created a recreational version of indoor football in 1930, meant to be played on basketball courts in Uruguay’s YMCAs. The YMCA helped futsal spread like wildfire across South America, particularly in Brazil. The sport could be played anywhere, at any time and in any weather condition — helping professional and recreational players stay in shape all year round. The first international competition took place in 1965, when Paraguay won the first South American Cup. Brazil reigned supreme in the years to come, taking the next six South American Cups and the first two Pan American Cups in 1980 and 1984. The sport’s name evolved from the Spanish fútbol sala and the Portuguese futebol de salão, translating to ‘lounge football’. The FIFUSA (predecessor to the AMF) registered the name as fut-sal after the sport’s second world championship, held in Madrid in 1986, and FIFA followed suit by adopting the new name. Futsal currently has two governing bodies: the AMF (Asociación Mundial de Fútbol de Salón) and FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). The AMF is the successor to futsal’s original governing body, the FIFUSA, and operates separately from FIFA, organising its own futsal competitions.

WHAT IS FUTSAL?

Futsal is a variant of five-a-side football played on a hard court (smaller than a football pitch) and usually indoors. The game is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Each team can have up to nine substitutes, and an unlimited number of substitutions is allowed — even when the ball is in play. A standard futsal match consists of two 20-minute periods, and each half can be extended to allow for penalty kicks or a direct free kick against a team that has committed more than five fouls. The interval between the two halves cannot exceed 15 minutes.

The teams use a low-bounce ball that is smaller and harder than in football, and the rules favour close control, passing in small spaces and technique — which makes futsal one of the most action-packed variations of football.
