The game of volleyball came to be when William G. Morgan (physical director of the YMCA) invented it in 1895. It was originally designed to be an indoor sport for players who found basketball too difficult. Morgan first referred to volleyball as ‘mintonette’, until its volleying nature was noted by a Springfield College professor who then came up with the name ‘volleyball’.
While volleyball first started in the US, it eventually made its way to Europe during World War I when national organisations were formed. In 1947, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was organised in Paris, which then moved to Switzerland in 1984. Asia hopped on the volleyball bandwagon too, as they played on a larger court, with a lower net, and nine players on each team.
The first international competition began in 1913 in Manila. The FIVB then sponsored men’s world volleyball championships in 1949 and women’s championships in 1952. This then led to the formation of standardised rules.
As with most sports, the game of volleyball evolved over time and did not remain an indoor sport. Beach volleyball was introduced in California in the 30’s, with two players per team. The first beach volleyball tournament was held in 1948 in Santa Monica, California. In 1986, a world championship was held in Rio de Janeiro, sanctioned by the FIVB. Volleyball became an official olympic sport for both men and women in 1964, as it was introduced in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Beach volleyball went on to be added to the 1966 Olympic Games in Georgia.
Now an Olympic sport, it came as no surprise that the number of volleyball fanatics rose in numbers drastically. Being a highly popular sport, online casinos quickly added betting selections on volleyball tournaments and events to their Sportsbook, and now it is quite rare for a casino not to offer volleyball betting markets. Before we get into the basics of volleyball betting, let’s take a look at some of the major volleyball events that happen around the world.
The CEV Champions League is a top men’s volleyball tournament for all clubs in Europe. There are about 20 teams that participate every year, which are split into five groups to go head-to-head in the league rounds. The five pool winners and the three best-ranked pool runners-up will advance to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
The women’s Super League is one of Russia’s top-tier women’s volleyball leagues, organised and administered by the Russian Volleyball Federation. It was originally founded in 1991, and there are a total of 10 teams that participate.
The men’s Super League is another major event taking place in Brazil, organised by the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation. The women’s league also shares the same name. The champion of the Super League qualifies for the South American Championship.
Knowing all your major volleyball events is the first step towards volleyball betting. Now you must know the kind of volleyball betting options you’ll have at most Sportsbooks:
A match bet is the simplest and most common bet you’ll find on Sportsbooks for practically any sport. The match bet entails wagering on which team you think will win the match. Simple, right? All you have to do is choose between the home team and the away team. It is important to note that in volleyball there are no draws, so you would only be able to bet on ‘home’ or ‘away’. You will earn a payout if the team you wagered on wins the game.
You can place a handicap bet within a match bet if you would like to spice things up a little. A handicap bet involves wagering on a player who you think will perform better than expected but will lose anyway. This sort of bet is often used as a way to even the odds on a one-sided game. This bet is quite similar to spread betting.
As its name suggests, the total points bet involves wagering on the total number of points scored in a game. This can go for both indoor and beach volleyball. Here, you will be required to predict the exact number of points that will be scored over the course of the match. With this sort of bet, it is important to keep in mind whether you’re betting on indoor volleyball or beach volleyball. This is because indoor volleyball matches run for five sets, whilst beach volleyball matches run for three. The number of sets played has a direct impact on your total points bet.
A correct score bet is quite similar to the match bet, only a little more refined. A correct score bet involves wagering on the correct score in terms of the number of sets in a match.
A set bet involves wagering on which team will win the set rather than the whole match. This is a good betting alternative to a match bet if you’re not sure which team will win the whole game, but have a good idea of which team will win that specific set.
A tournament bet is more of a long-term bet, especially when compared to other bets mentioned on this list. A tournament bet involves wagering on the eventual winner of the whole tournament. For instance, you can bet on whether a team will win a medal at the Olympics. So, it is considered a long-term wager simply because you have to wait quite some time to see if you’ll win a payout. Some tournaments have an initial stage and a knockout stage, where you could also place a tournament bet on which team you think will win the initial (stage instead of the whole tournament).
From what started as an alternative to basketball, now to form part of some of the major sporting events in the world, volleyball is not an event to be missed. With all the tournaments and events going on, you may find difficulty keeping up if you’re new to the betting scene, especially with all the betting options available.
