The Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup

The Netherland national team have reached the Final of the World Cup three times but never managed to win. In 1974 the Netherland national team lost out to West Germany and in the following edition they lost against Argentina after extra time. During that time the Netherlands had one of the best squads around with some of the best talent in the world.

Recently, in 2010, the Netherlands national team managed to win all the games leading to the Final but lost out against Spain, making it the third Final that the Netherlands national team lost.

Netherlands successes and failures at the previous FIFA World Cup

It is difficult to state that losing a Final is a success for the Netherlands national team but the campaign in 2010 was a perfect run up until the Final. With the Golden age of players within their ranks and no trophies to their name it might be more a disappointment rather than a success. With the likes of Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder and many others that made the Netherlands national team one of the most feared teams in the world.

After such great teams it was a disappointment for the Oranje that they did not make it to the Group Stages in Russia. The team bounced back positively after making a return to the World Cup stage as they qualified for the Qatar World Cup.

Netherland’s road to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

The Netherlands national football team made part of group G in the World Cup qualifiers, together with; Turkey, Norway, Montenegro, Latvia and Gibraltar. Netherlands squad managed to score a whopping 33 goals in the 10 qualifying matches the second highest from all the groups. The only defeat came against Turkey in the opening on Matchday one of the qualifiers. The Netherlands national team then managed to beat Turkey in the reverse fixture 6-1.

Who will the Netherlands play against at the Qatar 2022 World Cup?

The Netherlands national team will be participating in Group A, consisting of the host nation Qatar, Senegal and Ecuador.

The Netherlands are the favourites to win the Group with Senegal as close favourites as well. Qatar will have all the nation supporting them but not much expectations are on the team to make it out of the group considering it will be the first time participating in such a tournament.
