WHAT IS AMERICAN FOOTBALL?

American Football is the most popular sport in the United States with its global appeal quickly growing year by year. The game is played across a 100-yard field by two teams of 11 on-field players, which strive to outscore each other and claim as many points as possible. In the NFL, squads of up to 53 players make up each side's offensive, defensive and special teams units - which each take turns on the field during a game. The main aim of American Football is to move the ball into the opponent's end zone. This is typically achieved by rushing or throwing the ball across a series of plays. The offence must move the ball at least 10 yards every four plays in order to retain possession. With every 10-yard gain or more, the offence is awarded another four plays closer to their opponents end zone. Should the defensive team prevent their opponents from making up these yards, the offensive team must punt possession of the ball to the opposition. Should the offensive team be close enough to the goal they may attempt a field goal kick, in which a kicker tries to kick the ball between the goal crossbars to claim three points. After four 15-minute periods the team with the most points wins the game.

American Football Origins

Compared to the history of other sports, American football is relatively new. Stemming from the game of rugby, American football did not come to be until the late 19th century.

Early versions of American football were pretty brutal. The first American football game was played in 1869 when Rutgers and Princeton (two American college teams) went head to head.  No standardised rules were established yet, so teams featured a large number of players per side, and the game had a mix-and-match set of rules with high injury rates.

An effort to standardise rules was made when the Intercollegiate Football Association was established in 1873. However, this was to no avail as different colleges adopted different versions of the game and retained their own rules. So, when intercollegiate matches were held, rules and styles were borrowed and swapped between institutions. This continued until a rugby player from Yale, Walter Camp, pioneered the first set of American football rules in the 1880s. Walter Camp is known today as the ‘father of American football’.

A huge milestone was hit in 1892 when William ‘Pudge’ Heffelfinger was paid $500 to play for the Allegheny Athletic Association (AAA). This payment is the first documented cash payment in American football, which earned it the ‘pro football birth certificate’ tag. With players now being paid to play, this ultimately led to the creation of the NFL and AFL, which later formed the AFL-NFL World Championship. This championship became one of the biggest American football events to date, although it is now called the Super Bowl. American football was and still is a raging success. Having gathered thousands upon thousands of fans, hosting some of the most anticipated events in the US, sportsbooks did not hesitate to include this sport online.

American Football Betting Events

Now that we’ve covered the origins of American football, we’ll go through the basics of American football betting. The first thing you need to do is familiarise yourself with American football events. After all, how can you begin betting without knowing which events to bet on? Below we have compiled a list of some of the biggest American football events to help you get started.

NFL

Founded in 1920 in Canton, Ohio, the National Football League is one of the four major professional football leagues in America and is considered the highest level of pro American football in the world. When it was first established, this organisation was known as the American Professional Football Association but later reformed to become the NFL. The NFL features 32 teams divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The season runs for 18 weeks from September to January, with each team playing 17 regular-season games as of 2021 (previously, teams played 16 games since 1978).

CFL

The Canadian Football League was founded in 1958. It is a Canadian professional sports league and is the second oldest professional gridiron football association in North America. This football league is the highest level of Canadian football and one of Canada’s most popular sports leagues, second only to the NHL. A total of nine teams compete for the Grey Cup, in which four teams are in the Eastern Division and five are in the Western Division.

NCAA

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is an American organisation that administers intercollegiate athletics. Its tasks involve drawing up competitions and setting eligibility rules for football and other sports. The NCAA was founded in 1906 and was referred to as the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IAA). This company aids almost 500,000 college students to compete in college sports while organising athletic programs for colleges and universities.

American Football Betting Options

We’ve covered American football events; now, we’ll move on to betting options. Along your American football betting journey, you’ll find that not all sportsbooks offer the same set of choices. So, we’ll go through some of the most common types of bets you can expect to find. Many of these bets are consistent with those offered in other sports events, so you shouldn’t have trouble getting the hang of it.

As you get the betting ball rolling, you’ll find that the match winner bet is quite the popular choice. The match winner is one of the easiest bets you can place and is a great first choice. It doesn’t require much market knowledge and holds excellent entertainment value. The first half and first quarter bets are also very good starting points for new punters, especially if they want to avoid betting on the outright winner.

Players may want to dabble in the over/under and future bets to take things a step further. Both are pretty common but have a higher level of risk involved, so it is recommended to do a little research before placing these wagers. If you want to really spice things up, then perhaps parlay or proposition bets might pique your interest. As you get into more complex bets, it is always best to weigh the odds before betting. There are punters out there who enjoy being at the edge of their seats, and those who prefer to play it safe.

As you sprint to the end zone, it is always crucial to be mindful about how much you’re betting, as it can be easy to get lost in all the excitement. The best way to do this is by implementing a good bankroll strategy. Having a bankroll strategy allows you to safeguard your funds by setting betting limits, so it is an essential element in sports betting.
