History of the competition
The US Open is the oldest tennis championship in existence. Commencing in 1881 as the US National Championship, the American tennis tournament was first exclusive to only the male members of the US National Lawn Tennis Association before adding women to the roster in 1887.
After nearly a century of matches, the court surfaces were changed. Since 1978, the US Open has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, New York City.
In 1987, the US Open was chosen to become the chronologically fourth and final Grand Slam of the tennis calendar, typically beginning on the last Monday of August and ending after two weeks in September.
Since 1968, three men boast the most US Open championship victories. Rodger Federer, Jimmy Connors, and Pete Sampras have each become household names and icons of their time, with five US Open victories to their name.
Since the Open era of the sport, American pros Serena Williams and Chris Evert both hold the record in the women’s singles, with each of them winning the tournament a total of five times.

2021 US Open
