The first World Cup in which the Iran football team participated in was in the 1978 edition. After that year, they again made it to the 1998 edition – but they got knocked out in the group stages after notably winning their first game, which was against the United States in front of almost 40,000 spectators.

Iran national football team have not enjoyed much success since forming part of FIFA as they won only two games in the World Cup finals but the 2018 campaign they showed great improvement ranking four points from a possible nine considering they faced Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
The failure is that the Iran national football team are yet to make it out of the group stages despite participating four times in the modern format of the tournament.

Iran will be participating in Group B of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and will play against, England, USA and Wales.
The favourites to win the group are England followed by the USA and Wales. Iran are the least likely to win the group.
