Cameroon looking for more magic
There weren’t high expectations for the Indomitable Lions coming into Qatar 2022, but that’s not to say that the relatively inexperienced coach doesn’t have a lot of talent at his disposal. At the very least, Song’s ability to rally his new team to clip Algeria in the most dramatic fashion in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers shows that this Cameroon side can defy the odds.
To qualify from the CAF stages, Cameroon sealed five wins and one loss to pip Côte d’Ivoire, lost 1-0 in the first leg of the decisive Third Round, but then scored a volley in the fourth minute of extra time in the second leg to secure their Qatar 2022 dates. Prior to securing their eighth World Cup berth – under the previous head coach – Cameroon finished third in their 2022 hosting of the African Cup of Nations.
The big names on the field for Cameroon are goalkeeper André Onana and André Zambo Anguissa, who will need to be playing at their absolute best to give their nation a chance of winning. Going forward, Karl Toko Ekambi will provide more than a handful for Brazil’s right-back.
Name | Position | Matches | Goals |
Karl Toko Ekambi | Forward | 8 | 3 |
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting | Forward | 6 | 3 |
Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui | Defender | 8 | 2 |
Vincent Aboubakar | Forward | 8 | 2 |
Christian Bassogog | Forward | 5 | 2 |
Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu | Forward | 6 | 1 |
André Zambo Anguissa | Midfielder | 6 | 1 |
Pressure on Brazil to dispatch the African side comprehensively
Being the clear favourite to win a match – let alone the Qatar World Cup 2022 – can put a lot of pressure on a team to secure headline-catching results. Tite certainly has the talents to run riot against any side, but in big games – which Cameroon vs Brazil may well become – a conservative starting XI isn’t uncommon from the 61-year-old.
Brazil’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign was just as much built on stalwart defending as it was attacking prowess, finishing top of the table with 40 goals for, five against, and without a loss in 17 games. It gives credence to the idea that the nation will hoist its sixth World Cup trophy, as does their narrow 1-0 loss to Argentina in the 2021 Copa America Final.
Depending on results elsewhere, as Cameroon vs Brazil is the last of Group G, Tite might just run out of some of the side’s incredibly talented squad players. Ederson might be given the mitts for this – which certainly doesn’t diminish the quality of goalkeeping – while the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Bruno Guimarães, Philippe Coutinho, Danilo, and Gabriel Magalhães could be given a chance to impress.
Name | Position | Matches | Goals |
Neymar | Forward | 10 | 8 |
Richarlison | Forward | 8 | 6 |
Lucas Paquetá | Midfielder | 14 | 3 |
Raphinha | Forward | 7 | 3 |
Roberto Firmino | Forward | 6 | 3 |
Philippe Coutinho | Midfielder | 6 | 3 |
Marquinhos | Defender | 14 | 2 |
Gabriel Barbosa | Forward | 8 | 2 |
Éverton Ribeiro | Midfielder | 9 | 2 |
Antony | Forward | 9 | 2 |
Betting tips and odds on Cameroon vs Brazil in FIFA World Cup 2022 Group G
Even if Cameroon was to win each of its first two games handsomely in FIFA World Cup 2022 Group G, Brazil would almost certainly arrive as the favourites to win this game. Being an odds-boosting market, you’re bound to see several punters pile onto the handicap markets in favour of Brazil winning convincingly.
As Song drills his team to play exciting, expressive, attacking football, there will be gaps left across the pitch that crisp-passing Brazil can exploit. Equally, though, Cameroon shouldn’t be underestimated with their big front men, who can torment any back line – especially on set pieces.
