Belgium didn’t make it easy for the Italians last Friday.
The Azzurri started the game off wonderfully. A 13th minute disallowed goal by Giorgio Chiellini was quickly forgotten once the ball fell to Nicolo Barella in Belgium’s penalty area. The Inter man was able to make the most out of his chance, striking the ball without hesitation and putting his side 1-0 up. Lorenzo Insigne doubled the lead a few minutes later, after slicing through the Belgian midfield and finding the back of the net with a sensational effort from well outside the box.
Things looked like they were going according to plan for Roberto Mancini and his now 32-game undefeated side. However, nerves quickly crept into the team when Romelu Lukaku converted a penalty in the dying moments of the first half.
A nasty injury to Leonardo Spinazzola put the Italians on the back foot in the second half. At times pushing their luck, Italy employed their traditional game-management tactics to see out the remainder of the game and ensure their place in the EURO 2020 (2021) Semi-finals.
Historically for Italy, competition against Spain hasn’t gone their way. The Azzurri have only won twice in their last 14 matches against La Furia Roja (D7 L5), with their most recent victory a 2-0 win at EURO 2016 Round of 16.
As the only team left in the competition with a 100% record, Italy fans will be expecting their side to see off Spain at Wembley Stadium this Tuesday and book their place in the EURO 2020 (2021) Final.
After a tantalising display in the quarter-finals, Lorenzo Insigne comes in at 13/5 (3.60) to score, with Ciro Immobile at 7/4 (2.75) to make up for his missed chances and find the back of the net this Tuesday.
Italy come in at 7/10 (1.70) to score more than one goal at Wembley Stadium, and at the same odds of 7/10 (1.70) to qualify for the EURO 2020 (2021) Final.
SPAIN
Tournament form: D – D – W – W – D(W)
After taking the lead in the early minutes of the first half, Spain allowed Switzerland to settle into the quarter-final fixture and push them all the way to a penalty showdown.
A red card in extra time handed the advantage over to La Furia Roja, although it was a little too late for the team who have scored the most goals in the competition. Unable to capitalise on their extra man advantage, Spain rode their luck in a penalty shootout against the Rossocrociati, eventually coming out on top with three goals to Switzerland’s one.
Italy will be Spain’s biggest challenge to date in the competition. Although they’ve scored 11 goals in their last three EURO 2020 (2021) games, the Spanish outfit still look vulnerable at the back, a weakness Roberto Mancini will be undoubtedly keen to exploit.
When meeting with the media on behalf of the national side, Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta let slip that manager Luis Enrique is demanding his side show greater aggression and intensity in their upcoming game, as a win at Wembley will see Spain within touching distance of claiming a tournament they have won three times already.
Spain are measured at 9/8 (2.12) to qualify past Italy this Tuesday, with both teams at 29/4 (8.25) to put on a show and produce a semi-final thriller with more than four goals.
Alvaro Morata is calculated at 2/1 (3.00) to get his third goal of the competition, with Ferran Torres at 11/4 (3.75) to find the back of the net for Spain.
