JASON MCATEER’S PICKS AND MORE – SEMI-FINALS

JASON MCATEER’S PICKS AND MORE – SEMI-FINALS

After an exciting quarter-final round, we now know who is going through the EURO 2020 (2021) Semi-finals.

ITALY VS SPAIN

Well, we just don’t know which Spanish side is going to turn up. It was a poor performance (vs Switzerland). Good start from Luis Enrique’s team to go 1-0 up, and it looked like they were going to steamroll Switzerland, but it just wasn’t the case.

Switzerland got back into it, and Spain needed penalties to book their place in the semi-finals. Which Spain will turn up against Italy? If the attacking and clinical Spain turn up, they could give the Italians a shock.

As for the Italians qualifying past Belgium, it was their first real test in what has been a really dominant performance throughout this Euros. To beat the Belgians 2-1, it was an excellent performance and an excellent score for Roberto Mancini’s team. Belgium were without their talisman Eden Hazard who was out injured, but De Bruyne played – now we know he played injured – and to be fair, he couldn’t affect the game.

It was Italy that dominated the play in the first half. Belgium came back in the second, but it just wasn’t enough. The Italians ran out as deserved winners 2-1. Still, for me, they’re the firm favourites in the competition (Italy are outright winners at 9/4 (3.25)), but they’ve got to do it the hard way with a matchup against Spain in the semi-finals.

I think Italy will beat Spain. Spain will try to dominate the ball, but the Italians seem to have all the answers against all of the tactics which have been thrown against them throughout this competition. There’s a unity, a camaraderie, a team spirit with the Italians. Roberto Mancini will know his team won’t want to mess up in this semi-final.

Italy 3-1 Spain

ENGLAND VS DENMARK

The Czechs took on the Danes, who were riding on a wave of emotions. Who would have thought after two defeats in the group games that they would beat Russia 4-1 and get into the last 16?

Denmark are now going through to the semi-finals by beating the Czechs 2-1. In all honesty, the Czech Republic looked like they just ran out of steam. Denmark still didn’t look really convincing, but they got the job done. It was a hard-fought victory for Kasper Hjulmand’s men to get into the semi-finals. They will now have to face an England team that has just steamrolled past Ukraine.

Ukraine didn’t really offer anything. Andriy Shevchenko will be really disappointed with his teams’ performance in the quarter-finals. Gareth Southgate’s men ran out 4-0 winners against Ukraine.

A dominant performance by England.

Harry Kane got on the scoresheet twice in a dominant display and again they came away with another clean sheet. Very very strong. It’s been quite a pragmatic competition for Gareth Southgate; there’s no real flair to how England perform. Just getting the clean sheet and a four-goal win over Ukraine will put them in a buoyant mood and give them lots of confidence to go in against Denmark in the semi-finals.

It will be a tough game for England against Denmark. They’ll be up against different tactics, different oppositions and as I said, Denmark are riding a wave of emotions in this tournament. Is it their name on the trophy? That remains to be seen.

For me, I think England will just have enough. I think Denmark will run out of steam in the semi-finals. England should just have enough to run out as winners against the Danes and see themselves into the final.

So for me, I think it’s going to be an England vs Italy EURO 2020 (2021) Final on Saturday.

England 2-0 Denmark
