History of Volleyball
The game of volleyball was originally invented in 1895 by the director of the YMCA, William G. Morgan, who designed the game to be an indoor sport for those who found basketball too difficult. At the time, volleyball was referred to as ‘mintonette’ until a Springfield College professor took note of its volleying nature and came up with ‘volleyball’.
It was a roaring success in the US and quickly made its way to Europe during World War I as national organisations were formed. In 1947, the sport’s governing body was founded in Paris, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), which later moved to Switzerland in 1948. Clubs in Asia also began to form, only with slightly different rules — a larger court with a lower net and nine players per team.
With volleyball picking up, the FIVB did not waste any time organising the first international tournament in 1949 with the men’s World Volleyball Championships. The women’s championships followed shortly after in 1952. With volleyball becoming a global sport, the FIVB felt a need to standardise a set of universal rules.
It was clear that, as with many other sports, volleyball was ever-evolving. Beach volleyball was introduced in California in the ’30s with two players per team, so volleyball did not remain an indoor sport. In 1948, the first beach volleyball tournament was held in Santa Monica, California. Beach volleyball also became a global sensation as the first World Championship was held in Rio De Janeiro in 1986, sanctioned by the FIVB.
Unsurprisingly, volleyball also became an Olympic sport for both men and women in 1964 when it was introduced in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Beach volleyball followed suit in 1996 when it was introduced in the Atlanta Olympic Games.
Having gained so much recognition and popularity, online Sportsbooks did not hesitate to add volleyball to their betting list. Now, players can find and bet on all the hottest volleyball events of the season.
Volleyball Leagues
Learning how to smash every bet you place isn’t easy as there are many steps involved — one of which being knowing where to begin betting. The FIVB hosts many international leagues and tournaments, so it can be difficult to decide which competition to start with. Below, you’ll find a list of top tier volleyball leagues that’ll make excellent starting points for your betting journey:
FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship
The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship is an international tournament contested by members of the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). Since 1962, the tournament has been contested every four years.
European Volleyball League
The European Volleyball League is a men’s volleyball competition that began in 2004, featuring national teams from all over Europe. It is organised by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) and once served as a qualifying competition for the FIVB World League until 2017. The European Volleyball League should not be confused with the more prestigious European competition, the European Volleyball Championship.
The Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Nation’s League
The Volleyball Nation’s League is contested by members of the FIVB. The tournament’s creation was announced in October 2017, with the season kicking off in May 2018. The Nation’s League served as a replacement for the World League, a former men’s international competition, and the World Grand Prix, a former women’s international competition.
Olympics
Volleyball became an official Olympic sport in 1964. Still, its Olympic history can be traced back to the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1924, when the game was played as a demonstration event. A request had then been made to make volleyball an Olympic sport, and a special tournament was held in 1957 to help support this. The competition was clearly a success since it was officially introduced in 1964.
Volleyball Star Players
Volleyball tournaments don’t fail to keep your eyes glued to the screen with anticipation. But, there have been a few phenomenal players that have made these matches truly memorable. Take a look:
- Gavin Schmitt — Schmitt is a former Canadian club member for the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon. He was an extremely skilled player and went on to earn a silver medal at the 2013 NORCECA Volleyball Championship in Langley, Canada, with the men’s national team. In the 2014 Championship in Poland, Schmitt led the national team to score in six of the seven matches held. Canada finished in 17th place, which was its best result ever at the time. He formed part of Canada’s Olympic team in 2016.
- Earvin N’Gapeth — Born in 1991, Earvin N’Gapeth is a French professional volleyball player. He was the 2015 European Champion and a World League gold medalist in 2015 and 2017. His spiking skills are unmistakable and have earned him a solid place on this list.
- Saeid Marouf — Saeid Marouf is a professional Iranian volleyball player known for his position as a setter. He was named best setter at the 2014 World League, named the most valuable player in the 2013 Asian Championship and voted Sportsmen of the Year in 2015. He then went on to participate in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

Volleyball Betting Options
Volleyball online betting isn’t tough to pick up. As you go along your betting journey, you’ll find many of the betting options closely resemble those offered in other sporting events. One thing is for sure though, knowing what choices you’ll have and how to place them is crucial to becoming the punting wonder you wish to be. Keep in mind that different sportsbooks don’t always offer the same set of choices, but there are a few common volleyball bets you’ll likely come across.
For instance, match bet and totals are two extremely common wagers and also highly recommended for beginners. They are both pretty easy to place while omitting none of the fun. On top of that, bettors would not require much market knowledge in this stage of their betting, so they offer great starting points. Tournament bets are similar to match wagers, only higher up on the risk scale since you’d be betting on a whole tournament rather than a singular match. But, if you’re not ready to take the training wheels off just yet, you might want to dive into the set bet, which requires you to predict which team will win the set.
If you want to get into more complicated wagers, we suggest taking the time to research the tournament, participating teams and even individual players. The more informed you are, the better you will make decisions that would ultimately help your betting. With that said, handicaps and parlays are pretty popular choices for those daring punters. The correct score wager is also relatively common and a step higher than the match bet. If you want to add a little spice, you can always set prop bets that allow you to bet on different aspects of the game too,
One of the most important aspects of sports betting is handling your bankroll. Learning how to manage your funds and betting within your limits is an essential step in your journey, especially if you’re only just getting started. It is easy to get lost in all the spikes, volleys and sets, so having good bankroll management will go a long way. Our Responsible Gambling tools are always available should you require any additional help.
