TEN HAG – CHAPTER TWO
After a shocking start to life as a Manchester United coach, Erik ten Hag steered his team to a League Cup win and an FA Cup Final. Reaching a final is always a good sign but losing it to your neighbours, enabling them to complete the treble, is not the best. For the first season, that would go down well, especially key victories against FC Barcelona, Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal, which provided the highlight of the season. The team now enters into the second season, with a need to build on the progress of the first season. Defensively they improved a lot, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane snuffing out danger, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka slowly being re-introduced and actually proving to be a crucial cog in the system, especially in the League Cup final against Newcastle.
A lot has happened since taking over Manchester United, the Cristiano Ronaldo drama has been dealt with diligently, the sale of the club being hung over everyone’s head whilst also dealing with the situation of Mason Greenwood, which is something that might develop further in the coming days or weeks.
The philosophy and the building blocks are there, now it’s time for the players to understand and implement it on the pitch. Onana has been roped in from Inter, adding a leader at the back with a great passing range which will be useful to play out from the back and wiggle away from high-press traps. Mason Mount moved away from his boyhood club Chelsea and now he’s named Manchester United’s number seven, he will provide the energy and industry that Christian Eriksen no longer can provide. One of the most important signings is the striker, Rasmus Hojlund, who came in from Atalanta on an expensive transfer deal but has bags of potential to flourish under the tutelage of Ten Hag.
If everything goes according to plan, Manchester United are looking like a squad that could potentially trouble the top hitter in England, they need to improve substantially though.
PREMIER LEAGUE PREDICTION
As we stated above, there are high expectations for Manchester United, as always, but realistically speaking, taking a good look at their competition, if they once again finish in the top four, it would be a good season. Both Jurgen Klopp and now Mikel Arteta had at least two or three seasons to nurture the belief and philosophy that they wanted and success followed, so by that same metric, another season in the top four, a decent showing in the Champions League, and they could close the gap to Manchester City.
In terms of odds, LV BET is pricing Manchester United’s chances of winning the Premier League at 12.00, just shy of Liverpool. A more achievable goal would be finishing in the top four, which is the realistic expectation, and they are priced at 1.72 to once again seal Champions League football.
Manchester United start their campaign on Monday as they go up against Wolves at Old Trafford. We are pricing United to get off to a winning start at 1.33.
