INTRO: League of Legends

League of Legends is the esports behemoth, boasting over 110 million unique players every month. Released by Riot Games in 2009, the game has seen nothing but worldwide success and explosive growth. League of Legends is a highly strategic game with a steep learning curve, two characteristics perfectly suited for the highest level of competitive play. This article will cover the gameplay basics to help you get started on League of Legends esports betting. Let’s dive in!

What is League of Legends?

League of Legends (LoL) is a free-to-play, multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) that’s all about objective control and laying siege to the enemy base. Like its competitor, DotA 2, League is based on the popular game mod for Blizzard’s Warcraft III — Defense of the Ancients. Two teams of five spawn on opposing sides of the Summoner’s Rift, the main League of Legends map and game mode. The only way is forward: the objective is to push your way through the enemy lines and level the opponent’s base to the ground!

As professional LoL teams are gearing up for the looming League of Legends World Championship 2021, we’ll take a look at the core gameplay and upcoming League of Legends tournaments.

League of Legends Gameplay

The Rift is unforgiving, demanding impeccable precision and strategic thinking from every player. On average, a single match will last anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour, with three distinct gameplay stages: early, mid and late game. In short, players focus on lane dominance and farming gold in early game, while later stages are all about team fights and objectives. Understanding the timing and difficulty of each stage will equip you with the knowledge you need to get started with League of Legends betting and LoL esports as a whole.

The Rift

Summoner’s Rift is split into three lanes — top, middle and bottom — and the jungle. The enemy territory lies beyond the river, which runs down the centre of the map, and is concealed by the Fog of War. The Fog of War obstructs vision, cloaking approaching enemies and some of the game’s objectives. Players must coordinate attacks to breach enemy defences, gain vision control and secure objectives.

Objectives

Players assume the roles of League of Legends characters, called champions, each with unique abilities and a specific role on the Rift. There are over 150 LoL champions to choose from, and they can be classified as assassins, bruisers (fighters), mages, marksmen, supports and tanks. Together, the team must coordinate efforts to secure the game’s main objectives: gain gold by farming minions (small, combatant units spawned at base), bring down towers, inhibitors and ultimately the Nexus.

The Jungle

The jungle is teeming with monsters and valuable buffs. Tread lightly, this area of the map is shrouded by the Fog of War and is the Jungler’s domain! Take note of the Scuttler, Drake and Baron Nashor. These monsters provide not only heaps of gold but also vision and team-wide buffs, like increased damage and faster recall (return-to-base speed). The Drake and Baron are particularly important; the teams will engage in 5v5 battles to secure the kill, as the buffs obtained can turn the tides of the game.

League of Legends Events

League of Legends tournaments are some of the biggest esports events, attracting millions of viewers online and thousands of fans who fill the world’s largest stadiums and arenas. The competitive scene is all gas and no brakes, with round-the-clock tournaments and skirmishes in every corner of the world.

Each annual season of competition in the Championship Series is divided into two splits, spring and summer, running across 12 regions. The splits culminate in a double-elimination tournament between the top eight teams; when the season ends, the winners, runners-up and third-place teams of the summer playoffs will qualify for the LoL World Championship 2021, due to kick off in August 2021. The world’s top LoL teams will compete for a share of the $1,000,000 prize pool — it’s all or nothing on the Rift!
