Millions of League of Legends fans are holding their breath in anticipation of this weekend’s explosive finale. The 2021 World Championship will culminate in a decisive battle between two legends — DWG KIA and EDward Gaming — in a best-of-five Grand Final.
The battle of titans commences at 13:00 CET (GMT+1) on 6 November, held at the Laugardalsholl Sport Center in Reykjavik. Tune in ahead of the match to lock in your bets and show support for your favourites!
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP — KNOCKOUTS RECAP
The 2021 MSI winners Royal Never Give Up were one of the Knockout favourites to head into the Grand Final; however, EDward Gaming surprised fans and casters alike with a solid 3-2 showing in the quarter-finals, kicking RNG out of the running. EDG then faced Gen.G Esports in the semi-finals, who put up a great fight after effortlessly eliminating Cloud9 3-0. Gen.G maintained control over the first few games, but EDG stepped up when it mattered most — in the closing games. A lot rested on Scout’s shoulders, the team’s mid-laner, who managed to rein in and suppress Gen.G’s Bdd, leading EDG to victory.
For MAD Lions, it was an uphill battle from the moment they were matched against the DWG KIA giants — the South Korean team crushed EU hopefuls 3-0 in the quarter-finals, as did T1 on the other side of the bracket, sending Hanwha Life Esports packing. Up until the semi-finals DWG had a flawless run, entering the penultimate stage of the competition without tasting defeat. To everyone’s surprise, T1 gave the 2020 Worlds winners a run for their money; the battle went the distance and, unfortunately, T1 went home with a respectable third place (shared with Gen.G Esports).
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP — GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
EDWARD GAMING
Despite excellent results in LPL, the team’s domestic league, EDG are entering an international final for the first time since 2015’s MSI. It is a historic moment for the decorated team, who advanced to the Worlds semi-finals and finals for the first time in franchise history, and Meiko is the team’s only member who witnessed the relentless climb and the extraordinary achievement.
Although the team’s shining Worlds stars are mid-laner Scout and jungler JieJie, everyone else is equally capable of stepping up to the challenge. Their impeccable domestic showing and a valiant fight in 2021 Worlds speaks volumes about the team’s potential — as long as EDG keep their heads in the game, they have a solid shot at the Summoner’s Cup.
Flandre (top), JieJie (jungle), Scout (mid), Viper (ADC) and veteran Meiko (support).
DWG KIA
DWG KIA are heading into the final stage of the tournament as, undoubtedly, the heavy favourites. The defending champions know the territory and have a stellar track record on League’s most prominent stage, but if we’ve learned anything from this year’s top esports competitions — like DotA 2’s 2021 The International — it’s that anything is possible, especially when the stakes are this high.
It’s hard to size up the competition when DWG KIA have never faced EDward Gaming in the finals on an international stage; DWG have, however, acknowledged the potential threat on multiple occasions. Some say it’s just lions playing with their prey, but anyone who’s witnessed EDG’s scrim power will think otherwise. Despite the Chinese team’s underwhelming Groups performance and lack of experience this far ahead in Worlds, LCK’s DWG KIA must bring their best form and foot forward — the opposing LPL team has already shown that championship wins and perfect KDAs don’t frighten them.

GRAND FINAL FORMAT
- The teams play in a best-of-five format.
- The last team standing will be the next League of Legends World Champions.
