2022 FIFA WORLD CUP: GROUP F

2022 FIFA WORLD CUP: GROUP F

FIFA World CupGroup F is one of the most challenging groups on paper, with two huge football nations of Belgium and Croatia – who are capable of going all the way – going up against Morocco and Canada – who are more than capable of causing an upset of their own.

No national team in the group has previously won the World Cup. Croatia got the closest in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the final. Belgium also brings prestige to the group as the only team to have topped the charts of the FIFA ranking, albeit without winning the competition.

WHO EXACTLY ARE THE PARTICIPANTS OF GROUP F?

Group F is one of the most competitive groups. Belgium and Croatia both made it into the last four during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Canada notably returns to the World Cup group stages after a 36-year absence, while Morocco are now set to feature in their second World Cup competition in a row.

The first fixture for Group F will be between Morocco and Croatia on Wednesday, 23 November, at the Al Bayt stadium. Later, on the same day, Belgium line up against Croatia as the two favourites of the group face each other.

BELGIUM

The golden age of Belgium football failed to reach the final in Russia during FIFA World Cup 2018, as they were narrowly beaten by the eventual winners, France, in the semi-finals. Roberto Martinez will hope that they can get off to a great start to secure safe passage to the knockout stages. Although the Belgian Red Devils are well equipped with world-class players up and down the field, they are a team that has arguably never made the most of the talent they’ve got. Could everything change for them in the 2022 World Cup?

CANADA

The Canadian national team have made it to their first FIFA World Cup group stage after a 38-year absence by going undefeated in the qualifiers, edging past the USA and Mexico in the process. A characteristic that will make this Canadian side tough to beat is their youthful energy full of players looking to make history for their nation and piece together their very own underdog triumph.

MOROCCO

After being knocked out of the quarter-finals of the AFCON, Morocco confirmed their place in the FIFA World Cup 2022 by sailing past DR Congo by an aggregate scoreline of 5-2. Morocco is the second-highest African country in the world rankings, with players such as Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi and Sofiane Boufal ripping it up in the best league across Europe. Halilhodžić will know that he has a difficult task of making it into the knockout stage but will have faith in his team to give their all.

CROATIA

After coming agonisingly close in Russia, Croatia might find it difficult this time around to make it that far solely due to the ageing squad. There is no doubt about the quality within their ranks as Modric, Rebic, Perisic and Brozovic return to the world stage. Croatian supports will be keen to see how their team matches up against the best and see if they have what it takes to go all the way again.
