Free-roaming talents to baffle Morocco’s defence
Head coach John Herdman came into the Canada national team job in 2018, and since then, he’s cultivated some of the nation’s most exciting talents of all time, leaning into their inherent versatility and athleticism. This allows him to deploy the stars of Les Rouges to counter the next opponent and grant stars much more freedom, making Canada somewhat unpredictable and tough to contain with conventional strategies.
The offensive and defensive prowess that this flexibility grants Canada was put on full display during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification stages. Scoring 23 goals and only conceding seven, Canada topped the CONCACAF qualification table with 28 points from 14 games. Their Qatar 2022 dates mark a second entry to the biggest single-sport tournament in the world, seeking to improve on three losses and zero goals scored from 1986.
All eyes will be on the wonderfully athletic Alphonso Davies in this one, who often starts at left-back or left-midfield, only to roam into other areas when attacks get underway. Also powering the forward moves will surely be FC Porto playmaker Stephen Eustáquio, winger Cyle Larin, and aggressive striker Jonathan David.
Name | Position | Matches | Goals |
Cyle Larin | Forward | 16 | 13 |
Jonathan David | Forward | 18 | 9 |
Lucas Cavallini | Forward | 10 | 5 |
Alphonso Davies | Defender / Midfielder | 13 | 4 |
Tajon Buchanan | Forward | 17 | 3 |
Junior Hoilett | Forward | 13 | 3 |
Mark-Anthony Kaye | Midfielder | 15 | 2 |
Atiba Hutchinson | Defender | 11 | 2 |
Morocco’s own star to go head-to-head with Canada’s
Vahid Halilhodžić may need to adapt his usual strategies. In the 2021 African Cup of Nations, which took place in early 2022, the openness of his tactics certainly made Morocco an attacking threat throughout, but mostly standing off key players and forcing a high line was taken advantage of by skilled forwards.
Still, in the CAF FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers, Morocco’s flair-filled methods dominated Group I to the tune of six wins from six games, 20 goals for, and one goal against. In the next round, they drew 1-1 and then crushed DR Congo 4-1 to make it to Qatar. This is the Atlas Lions’ sixth showing at the World Cup, coming in after a Quarter-Finals run in the Africa Cup of Nations that was ended by Egypt in extra time.
As the most defensively assured midfielder, Morocco will rely on Sofyan Amrabat to close down Canada’s attackers before the defenders need to step in. Achraf Hakimi, as a creative outlet down the right side, could occupy Davies for much of the match, with the 23-year-old arguably being on the same level as the Canadian for talent and with a similar, versatile style of two-way play.
Name | Position | Matches | Goals |
Ayoub El Kaabi | Forward | 7 | 5 |
Ryan Mmaee | Forward | 8 | 4 |
Achraf Hakimi | Defender / Midfielder | 7 | 2 |
Imran Louza | Midfielder | 6 | 2 |
Selim Amallah | Midfielder | 6 | 2 |
Tarik Tissoudali | Forward | 2 | 2 |
Azzedine Ounahi | Midfielder | 1 | 2 |
