Will Japan’s attacking flair be enough?
After the 2018 World Cup, which saw Japan bow out to one of the favourites, Belgium, 3-2 in the Round of 16, Hajime Moriyasu took the helm. Preferring an attacking style, often in a 4-2-3-1 formation, to Japan’s usual stalwart defence-first mentality, Moriyasu has brought an exciting new look to the Samurai Blue.
If history repeats itself, Japan won’t make it out of Group E, having alternated between elimination in the group stage and then the Round of 16 across their six entries to the tournament since 1998. Elsewhere, Japan lost in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup Final to Qatar.
In the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers, Japan were pipped to first place by a single point in the AFC’s Group B by Saudi Arabia. Top of the bill for Japanese talent are the likes of Daichi Kamada, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Takumi Minamino, Kyogo Furuhashi, and the incredibly exciting young talent Takefusa Kubo.

Takumi Minamino | Forward | 15 | 10 |

Luis Enrique looking to build on Spain’s strong Euros showing
It’s still about possession play for Spain and waiting for opportunities to present themselves and pressing relentlessly without the ball. Still, with this next-generation side that Luis Enrique is bringing to the fore, there’s more energy, with his fitness fanaticism rubbing off on the team.
As for tournament showings, La Furia Roja is now a decade removed from the legends that delivered a World Cup bookended by two consecutive European Championships. Since Enrique took the helm in 2019, Spain are back on track, reaching the semi-finals of the Euros last year.
To achieve their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, Enrique had to rally his team after early point drops, but they won their last four games to nil and finished top of Group B.
Enrique has a distinct and strange aversion to almost all Real Madrid players, but that doesn’t mean that the Spanish are lacking options. Pedri, Rodri, Aymeric Laporte, Ferrán Torres, Álvaro Morata, and Koke headline, while old heads like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and César Azpilicueta keep the young guns grounded.
Name | Position | Matches | Goals |
Ferrán Torres | Forward | 6 | 4 |
Álvaro Morata | Forward | 7 | 2 |
Pablo Sarabia | Forward | 5 | 2 |
Dani Olmo | Midfielder | 5 | 2 |
Carlos Soler | Midfielder | 4 | 2 |
Betting tips and odds on Japan vs Spain in FIFA World Cup 2022 Group E
As one of the final Qatar 2022 dates for the group stages, all eyes will be on the FIFA World Cup 2022 Group E match between Spain and Japan. Spain are the group favourites and will be favoured to snag this match as well.
There isn’t any doubt that Japan will put up a fight, and it seems likely that they’ll score a goal with so many speedy, skilful forwards in the squad. However, Spain’s high-stamina, possession-based play should see them through, picking holes in an overzealous Japanese side and winning by at least a two-goal margin.
After all, according to the odds, Spain’s stage of elimination is most likely to be the quarter-finals at 2/1. Japan are priced at 10/1 to win Group E, far below Spain and Germany.
In the UK, Japan vs Spain will show live on ITV and will be the 7pm kick-off of the day.
