Morocco’s leadership in doubt
Few would dispute Vahid Halilhodžić’s credentials, having delivered World Cup qualification to Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria, Japan, and now Morocco, but like with Côte d’Ivoire and Japan, the Bosnian may not be around for the Qatar World Cup 2022. Disputes between Halilhodžić and some of the stars of the Atlas Lions have weighed heavily.
Morocco have been to the World Cup five times, escaping the groups in 1986 by topping the set of England, Poland, and Portugal. In the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, they breezed to the top of Group I with a perfect record, beating DR Congo in the third round. In the 2021 African Cup of Nations, Morocco met eventual finalists Egypt in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 in extra time.
If the discipline-driven coach remains in charge, Morocco will play quick passes and drive up the pitch via their most technical players, which includes Achraf Hakimi, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Sofiane Boufal. Stalwart Croatia to be resolute as ever
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that Zlatko Dalić has transformed Croatia since taking the helm in 2017, evolving the team from a plucky bunch that could upset the odd giant into one of the continent’s elite. Changing the atmosphere was the start, but allowing veterans like Luka Modrić and Ivan Perišić less defensive responsibility and a lot more creative freedom transformed the results.
After finishing third in Croatia’s first crack at the World Cup in 1998, it took them two decades to escape the group stage again, which ended in a run to the final. For their FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers, the Kockasti topped a tough group by a single point, only losing once. At Euro 2020, though, they bowed out in the round of 16.
Modrić, Andrej Kramarić, Domagoj Vida, and Perišić are all over 30-years-old but still have key roles to play in Dalić’s side. Around them, Marcelo Brozović, Mateo Kovačić, and Mario Pašalić add some more youthful bite.
