It has been 64 years since the last time Wales qualified for the FIFA World Cup. In the qualifying rounds, Wales secured their passage after beating Austria 2-1, which then set up a Final against Ukraine. Ukraine created plenty of opportunities but did not manage to convert any; instead Yarmolenko conceded an own goal which was the difference between the sides.

Gareth Bale and his compatriots will be gunning to give some joy to the Welsh nation after a long time of waiting.

Wales at the FIFA World Cup

Wales do not have a great rich history in the FIFA World Cup as they only participated once before. In the one and only appearance in the World Cup, Wales national team managed to go reach the quarter-finals, something that most of the competing teams have never reached.

The 1958 FIFA World Cup was hosted in Sweden, with the Final being played in Stockholm. The format was different from the way we are used to nowadays. Four groups of four were to play against the other three teams, and the top two teams would then progress to the knockout stage since there weren’t many teams involved; once teams made it out of their groups they fund themselves directly in the quarter-finals.

Wales competed in Group 3 against hosts Sweden, Hungary and Mexico. In the opening game, Wales drew against Hungary thanks to John Charles equalising after Bozsik netted in the first five minutes for Hungary. Once again, against Mexico, the scoreline ended 1-1, this time, the Wales national team went ahead but were pegged back by a late strike from Belmonte. In the final game against Sweden, it was a 0-0 draw again. As both Wales and Hungary were level on points, they had to play against in a play-off, in which Wales won 2-1 and marking their first and only victory in a World Cup finals to date.

In the quarter-finals, Wales faced Brazil, who were boosted by the rise of a young Pele. He scored the only goal as Brazil advanced to the semi-final.

Wales successes and failures at the previous FIFA World Cup

As the Wales national team only featured in one World Cup prior to the one in Qatar, there is not much history of when they performed well and not.

Wales national team will break one of the longest streaks when they make it to Qatar next November, it has been 64 years waiting, and all of Wales will be proud of the team and their efforts.

The best and only campaign in the FIFA World Cup was back in 1958 when Wales reached the quarter-finals after they had beaten Hungary in the playoff game. John Charles will surely be remembered as being one of the best all-rounded players in the history of the U.K.

Wales’ road to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

The road to Qatar was a long one for Wales national team, as they came in second in their group, meaning they had to go through a play-off. In the playoff games, especially against Austria, the star man Gareth Bale scored twice to put his side one step closer to Qatar. Watch here as Gareth Bale showed his class with a wonderful free-kick.

Against Ukraine, it was a bit different as Wales were under the cosh, with just 32% possession and three shots on target against the nine on target for Ukraine, but it was an own goal by Yarmolenko that broke Ukrainian hearts, much to the delight of the Wales national team.

Wales squad for the World Cup in Qatar

Undoubtedly, the first name that pops up when you think of Wales is Gareth Bale, but for a team to have reached the World Cup finals, a great team is behind that success, not just one player. Wayne Hennessey will be between the sticks with Ben Davies, Neco Williams and Connor Roberts as the key defenders keeping the opposing attackers at bay.

In midfield, the experienced Joe Allen, as well as Aaron Ramsey, will try and impose control whilst Harry Wilson and Brennan Johnson will try to create and spark some great attacking threat.

Rob Page will be the man in charge of leading the Wales national football team players towards the World Cup finals. He is a Welsh football manager and former professional footballer, spending most of his career playing in the Premier League and the English Football League.
