EURO 2024 QUALIFIERS: ITALY V ENGLAND

Euro 2024 Qualifiers

It’s time for the International squads to assemble again after the FIFA World Cup, this time for the qualifiers of the Euro 2024. This will be the first game of Group C as the teams meet again after the Euro 2020 Final at Wembley. We all know what happened in that game and England would love to get one over the Italians this time around. Italy are changing their approach in terms of player selections and they have a lot of exciting new talent coming through the ranks. It will surely be a spectacular game to watch.

Italy

Italy failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar after winning the Euro 2020 which was a shock for the Italian national team and it sent shockwaves throughout the squad. In recent games they managed to top the Nations League group A3 which consisted of England, Germany and Hungary. Roberto Mancini is fielding a very young squad which needs to be given time to bear fruit—the Italian national team are willing to give this new generation a chance.

Mancini will have Federico Chiesa, should he shake off the knock that he sustained from the game against Inter, which will add more firepower to the Azzuri’s attack. Wilfried Gnoto has become a regular starter alongside the 23-year-old Giacomo Raspadori, who is yet to get going in Serie A with Sassuolo – he scored only one goal in 15 games.

We might see a very progressive side playing a 3-5-2 formation to dominate the midfield and push forward Di Lorenzo and Dimarco as much as possible to provide overlaps and crosses into the box. We are pricing a 2-1 win for Italy at the Armando Maradona Stadium at 9/1 (10.00), with Wilfried Gnoto to score anytime during the match at 14/5 (3.80)

England

Gareth Southgate managed to keep his position as the England manager and is now preparing his team to compete in the European tournament once again. This time around the ambition is clear, England should build on the great progress that they have made in recent tournaments and lift a major trophy. Anything short of that will be considered a failure.

Some of the most exciting talents in the world are eligible to play for England, namely, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. One of the biggest criticism that Southgate faces is the pragmatic way in which his teams play, with many firing shots at household names that look to be ever present despite their club form. The stakes will be high this week, should Southgate elect to go for the 4-3-3 formation, the front three will be required to drop in when defending to help out the midfielders who might be overwhelmed with the fierce pressure from the Italian squad. The two teams have met frequently in recent years so that would give a good understanding of how to approach the match.

We are still confident that England will have what it takes to get the win in Naples, a 2-0 win is priced at 11/1 (12.00), with Bukayo Saka to score anytime during the match at 5/2 (3.50).

Match Odds

England despite playing away from home are the slight favourites to win at 8/5 (2.60), with Italy the reigning European champions at 19/10 (2.90), and a draw at 47/20 (3.35)
