The UFC has revolutionised the fighting business as a brand, a sport and a community and moulded it into one massive industry. While mixed martial arts was once looked down upon as a fighting style, it is now one of the most widespread martial arts in the world.
As the largest global Pay-per-view event provider, the UFC is chock-full of heart-pounding moments that would have you grappling the ropes. So, if you’re looking for an ultimate sports betting experience, then the UFC is an excellent choice. And, while you get into your fighting stance, we’ll be your cornerman every step of the way! Are you ready to step into the ring of the Ultimate Fighting Championship?
Before we get into all the juicy details, let’s take a look at how it all started.
The UFC, aka the Ultimate Fighting Championship, is a company that organises MMA promotions. Its first event, launched in 1993, featured two fighters with different fighting styles pitted against each other. Fighters sported an array of different martial arts, including kickboxing, karate, sumo and boxing. But the fighter that took home the win was Royce Gracie with Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This event was referred to as a one-off by owner Dana White, but it did so well that it kept the UFC going.
MMA events, at the time, had little to no rules. Fighters could use many moves deemed illegal today, which caused many people to look down on MMA. But, to help paint MMA in a new light, John McCarthy and Jeff Blatnick created a new set of rules.
The UFC shot to stardom when it organised the Ultimate Fighter tournament in the early 2000s. Women were allowed to participate in the UFC by 2012, which only boosted the organisation even more — especially with mega star fighters like Ronda Rousey that put women’s UFC on the sporting map. The same year she debuted, the acclaimed fighter Connor McGregor entered the ring against Diego Brandão. Unsurprisingly, McGregor took home the win after the first round.
In 2016, the company was sold to WME-IMG for a whopping $4 billion; for reference, it was worth just $2 million in the early 2000s. The UFC continued to make multiple deals over time with major broadcasters, such as Fox and ESPN, helping take the promotion to a whole other level as it gained mass media coverage. The UFC also went on to make brand deals with Reebok and Venum.
Today, the UFC is a global sensation, having attracted hundreds upon thousands of fans. And, as the largest PPV event provider, it’s hard to say when, or if, it’ll ever slow down.
So, what kind of gripping fights can one expect when betting on UFC? One of the pillars of sports betting is knowing what events you can bet on. After all, how can you expect to place bets if you won’t know where to place them?
Produced by the UFC and Fox Sports 1, the Ultimate Fighter is a reality television show that follows pro-MMA fighters living together in Las Vegas. Viewers watch the fighters train and compete against each other for a chance to win a six-figure contract with the UFC. The Ultimate Fighter series was first aired on Spike TV in January 2005 and went on for 14 seasons. As of 2021, the show aired for 28 seasons, with two seasons per year featuring one or two weight classes.
Fight Night events are held in Las Vegas and are probably some of the most popular events organised by the UFC, as they feature some of the biggest names in the UFC. Some of the Fight Night events you might have seen include Poirier vs McGregor, Vettori vs Holland and Font vs Garbrandt.
The numbered events are fights that fall under the PPV UFC event collection. They are held roughly once a month in massive arenas like Madison Square Garden or the SG Gran and T-Mobile Arena. Numbered UFC fights/cards have a championship fight serving as the main event, or, on rare occasions, two or even three. For example, UFC 205 featured three championship fights, including Tyron Woodley vs Stephen Thompson, Eddie Alvarez vs Conor McGregor and Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs Joanna Jędrzejczyk.
Now that you’ve taken a jab at UFC events let’s look at a few UFC betting options. The bets offered on UFC events are quite different from those offered in football tournaments or basketball matches. Different sportsbooks also offer a different set of options, but as your trusty coach, we’ll help you ground and pound some of the most common types of UFC bets.
The wager that’s probably the most common across all types of sports is the moneyline bet. The moneyline offers a great starting point for punters as all it requires is betting on the winner of a fight. Simple to place, easy to understand and not much knowledge required — perfect for players who want to warm up a little first.
Following the same betting pattern, the method of victory wager helps crank up your betting while keeping things interesting. Whether you choose victory by decision, draw, submission or KO, you’ll be at the edge of your seat till the very end.
If you want to up the risk factor, wagers like the exact round finish and go the distance bet are excellent choices. These types of bets require precise predictions, so it is recommended that you only go for these wagers once you’ve gained market knowledge.
If you’d rather stick to more well-known bets, you’ll likely find totals wagers as well as parlays on the majority of UFC brawls.
Whether you play it safe or enjoy taking the long shot, you must have a good bankroll management strategy in place. As we’ve said earlier, UFC betting options are pretty different to those offered in other, more traditional sports. Having a bankroll management strategy will help safeguard your funds and help you bet within your limits. You are putting real money on the line, after all. That being said, if you ever need some additional assistance, you can access our Responsible Gaming tools at any time.
