Qatar football team at the FIFA World Cup

The Qatar football team will be the first Arab nation to host a World Cup and will feature in the same competition for the first time. The Qatar national football team has appeared in 10 Asian cup tournaments and won it in the 2019 edition. Winning the Asian Cup is a fantastic achievement for an up-and-coming nation like Qatar. Other titles that the national team won are the Arabian Gulf Cup in 1992, 2004 and, more recently, 2014.

The person who will lead them to their first World Cup will be Felix Sanchez Bas, appointed senior team coach in 2017, after coaching the U19 and U23, respectively. He started his coaching career with Barcelona Youth, spending ten years there before travelling to Qatar to join the Aspire Academy. The move to Qatar suited the Spaniard as he flourished when given the opportunity to coach the U19 side.

The Qatar squad does not have world-known players, with most of the players experienced on an international level, with an average age of 26.35. Another factor that might not be present in other teams is that 10 players play with Al Sadd FC in the Qatar Stars League. Having such a high amount of players coming from a single team gives them great unity and understanding of one another, an important trait to have in sports such as football.

Qatar national football team’s successes and failures at the previous FIFA World Cup

Since this will be the first entry to the FIFA World Cup group stage, the National team of Qatar do not have any history or experience of reaching this stage of the competition. History will be written by the stars who will proudly represent their country in Qatar.

Qatar’s road to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

Qatar have qualified for the first FIFA World Cup in their history as the host country, which grants them an automatic spot in the group stages.

Who will Qatar play against at the Qatar 2022 World Cup?

As the Qatar national team makes its first appearance, it will play against the very top teams in world football. Competing in Group A we have, Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands.

The last time the Netherlands made it to a World Cup group stage was back in 2014, as they missed out on the last World Cup in Russia. The team has great potential with a youthful squad as well as having world-class players in their ranks, such as Van Dijk, Frankie De Jong and De Ligt to name a few.

Ecuador’s place in the group stage is still uncertain due to the FIFA launching an investigation due to complaints from Chile that one of the Ecuadorian players played illegally in the qualifying matches. You can read more about the investigation, here

Completing Group A is Senegal, who are making their third appearance in a World Cup finals stage after their 2002 and 2018 appearances. In 2002, the Senegal National team reached the quarter-finals after securing a second-place finish in their respective group. In 2018, they were the first team in World Cup history to be eliminated using the fair play rule after being tied with Japan on the first six tiebreakers.

The fixtures for the Qatar National team are as follows:

  • Qatar vs Ecuador (Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor; kick-off 4:00 PM)
  • Qatar vs Senegal (Al Thumama Stadium, Al Khor; kick-off 1:00 PM)
  • Netherlands vs Qatar (Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor; kick-off 3:00 PM)

Qatar despite being the host nation, according to the bookmakers are given the least chance to make it to the next stage of the competition. The Qatar National team are priced at 14/1 (15.00) to win Group A. Bets on Qatar National Football team at LV BET

The first Arabic country to host a World Cup will be the underdog in Group A, and we are pricing Qatar to be eliminated in the Group Stage at 1/10 (1.10), as the bookies give a very narrow chance for the local stars to have what it takes to progress to the elimination stage. On a more positive note, we are pricing the Qatar National football team to reach the quarter-finals at 17/1 (18.00).
