Serbia at the FIFA World Cup

Serbia national football team has never been to a final in a FIFA World Cup as they twice got beat in the semi-final (1930 and 1962). In other appearances, the Serbia national team has struggled to get out of the group stage getting eliminated in the editions 2006, 2010 and 2018.

It was when they played under the name of SFR Yugoslavia that they enjoyed the most success, reaching two consecutive quarter-finals and a semi-final in the 1962 edition.

The top goalscorer for the Serbia national team is Drazan Jerkovic with four goals, all goals were scored in the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Jerkovic’s four goals were enough to secure him the shared Golden Boot award. The most appearances for the Serbian national football team are nine matches in which four different players share and these are: Dejan Stankovic, Dragan Stojkovic, Ivica Surjak and Dragoslav Sekularac.

Serbia’s successes and failures at the previous FIFA World Cup

Two of the best FIFA World Cups in Serbia’s history are 1962 and 1990. The 1962 campaign started off against the Soviet Union where Serbia suffered a 2-0 loss putting them on the weak foot to qualify from the group. Serbia managed to secure important victories against Uruguay (3-1) and Colombia (5-0) to see them into the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, Serbia faced a strong West Germany side who in 1958 reached the semi-finals, but it was Serbia who won on the night thanks to Radakovic’s goal. In the semi-final, Serbia football team played against Czechoslovakia but lost 3-1.

The latest appearances in the FIFA World Cup haven’t been the best for the Serbian national team winning only two games in their last nine games since 2006. The worst defeat came against Argentina when they lost 6-0.

Serbia’s road to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

Serbia managed to win Group A in the European qualification for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on the last day of the qualifiers as they won 2-1 against Portugal. It was a deciding fixture if either side wins the game they will secure World Cup qualification. Portugal started off the best scoring within three minutes of the game but Serbia grew in the game and equalised just past the half-hour mark. But it was all decided in the closing stages when Mitrovic netted the winner and the World Cup qualification in style.

Dragan Stojkovic will be the coach for the national team since he got appointed back in 2021. Stojkovic will lead the Serbia national football team players to his first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance.

Serbia has some great talent within their squad with the likes of Dusan Vlahovic, Tadic, Kostic, Jovic and Milinkovic-Savic. Alexander Mitrovic is the all-time top goalscorer for the Serbia national team; he has enjoyed one of the best seasons in his career with Fulham scoring an outstanding 43 goals in 44 appearances.
