Spain at the FIFA World Cup

Spain national football team is one of the most present in the World Cup finals, with 16 appearances out of the possible 22. Spanish football has produced some of the best footballing stories in recent years. The success in the 2010 FIFA World Cup was a testament to the hard work that the Spanish national team had put into assembling the best team possible.

The only time that the Spain national team managed to get close to a final was back in 1950 when they came in fourth winning three of their six matches played. The following years for the Spanish national team weren’t the best as they appeared in the 1962, 1966 and 1978 FIFA World Cups and got eliminated at the Group stages in all mentioned years.

Spain’s successes and failures at the previous FIFA World Cup

The great success for the Spain national football team will undoubtedly be in 2010 when they qualified for the World Cup, winning all 10 games and conceding just five in the process. The only loss they suffered was the first group stage fixture against Switzerland. As the team progressed to the knockout stage, a single goal from David Villa in both matches against Portugal and Paraguay secured their place in the semi-final against Germany. It was yet another 1-0 victory for the Spain squad as Puyol scored. The final was played against the Netherlands, the game was tight, and most of the chances fell at the feet of the Dutch team, but they faced an inspired Iker Casillas between the sticks. In extra time, Iniesta latched on through a cross and volleyed home one of the most iconic goals in World Cup history.

The success in 2010 came after years of disappointing appearances in the World Cup, with most of the eliminations coming in the Group stage or the Round of 16. Like many other reigning world champions, 2014 was a difficult campaign for the Spain national team. They lost the opening match 5-1 against the Netherlands and another defeat against Chile. In the last fixture, they managed to beat Australia 3-0, but it was too little too late for the team to claw themselves out of the group stages.

Spain’s road to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

In the eight matches played, Spain managed to win six, draw one and lose one. The Spain national team managed to score 15 goals and conceded just five in the process.

Spain squad for the World Cup in Qatar

The Spain national football team players have one of the most promising talents with the likes of Gavi and Ansu Fati in their ranks. Within their team, Spain have great experience in decisive situations, such as Sergio Busquets, Carvajal, Thiago and Morata in the attack.

Players such as Carlos Soler, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres have shown what they are capable of on a club level and are yet to transform that form on the International level. Ferran Torres secured his move to Barcelone but has not enjoyed the best of time after joining in from Manchester City. Dani Olmo featured in most games in the last UEFA Euro competition but did not have the impact desired.

The coach for the Spain national team will be Luis Enrique, who previously managed Barcelona and is widely considered to be one of the best managers in the world.
