Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup

The Uruguay national team hosted and won the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, beating rivals Argentina 4-2 in the final. Their last triumph was in 1950, when they managed to win against host Brazil 2-0 in the final match. In total the Uruguay National football team qualified for thirteen World Cups, reaching the second round on 10 occasions, the semifinals five times and the final twice in which they won. Uruguay is one of the most successful teams in the world, having won nineteen FIFA official titles: two World Cups, two Olympic Games, and 15 Copa America championships.

Uruguay football team refused to participate in 1934 and defend their title because many European nations declined to take part in 1930 held in Uruguay. They also refused to enter in 1938 because FIFA’s decision to hold the tournament in France caused outrage in South America as it was believed that the venue would alternate between the two continents.

Ever since the first tournament commenced, the Uruguay national football team failed to qualify for the World Cup seven times. An interesting statistic is that Uruguay got eliminated from the group stage only four times, proving that Uruguay squad has been very competitive even when not winning the tournament. Their recent best performance was back in 2010 when they reached a semifinal but lost out to the Netherlands in a thrilling encounter ending 3-2. The 2010 campaign was Forlan’s last World Cup and he showed his quality by scoring four goals pushing his side to yet another semifinal.

Uruguay successes and failures at the previous FIFA World Cup

Without a doubt one of the biggest success stories in the history of Uruguay national football team is winning the World Cup at home. The road to glory in the 1930 was a bit different from what we are used to seeing in a modern FIFA World Cup tournament. The group stages consisted only two games as teams competed in groups of three, which who tops the group will go straight into a semi-final. Uruguay opened their campaign by winning 1-0 against Peru, followed by a dominant display against Romania winning 4-0. In the semi-final Uruguay lined up against Yugoslavia, where Cea scored a hattrick and putting his side into the final as the score ended 6-1. In the Final, Dorado put his side in front inside the first 12 minutes but a swift comeback from Argentina saw Uruguay go behind 2-1. In the second-half it was all about Uruguay as the team scored three times through Cea, Iriarte and Castro sealing the win and the crown of World Champions for the first time ever.

One of the worst performances by the Uruguay national team was back in 1974 when the tournament was hosted by Germany. The Group was characterized by the Netherlands, Sweden and Bulgaria. In the opening match against the Netherlands, Uruguay lost 2-0. The only point gained throught the group stage games was earned against Bulgaria as Pavoni equalised late on to keep the Uruguay national team in contention. In the last game, Sweden stamped their authority as they netted three times against Uruguay marking their worst every performance in the World Cup.

Uruguay’s road to the Qatar 2022 World Cup

In the CONMEBOL qualification group Uruguay was best of the rest as they claimed third spot after Brazil and Argentina. The Uruguay national team managed to win eight of the 18 games played losing six and drawing four giving them a tally of 28 points – two more than Ecuador in fourth place. The objective for the team was to get third place as they well aware that they are not able to compete against Brazil and Argentina as they managed to complete the whole qualifying round without losing a game.

Uruguay managed to seal their place in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a string of positive results in the last four games winning against Chile, Peru, Venezuela and Paraguay.
