MASON MOUNT TO MANCHESTER UNITED

Mason Mount to Manchester United

It has been confirmed that Manchester United have signed Mason Mount from Chelsea for a reported fee of £55 m + £5 m in add-ons. How does he fit into the system that Erik ten Hag wants? Why did Manchester United sign Mason Mount in the first place? These are some of the questions that we will answer during this blog as we dissect the transfer of Mason Mount to Manchester United.

How does Mount fit at Manchester United?

So, let’s start with the way Manchester United would ideally like to play under Erik ten Hag. He loves players who work hard out of possession and are able to keep control of the ball when in possession. The signing of Casemiro has worked brilliantly, making him a key cog in the machine that brought Manchester United back into the top four last season. His ability to sniff out danger, intercepting passes and intelligence on the ball has proven crucial. The issue is that Casemiro is getting older, and he might not be able to cover as much ground, so Manchester United will get a player who is young and full of industry to help elevate the defensive responsibilities from Casemiro whilst also possessing the qualities in the attacking third.

A trio of Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and Casemiro would be great to start with against any opposition, with Christian Eriksen and Fred available on the sidelines should need be. It’s another option for Ten Hag since the signing of Donny Van de Beek hasn’t worked out, after he sustained an injury, seeing him ruled out of the majority of last season.

The situation at Manchester United

The scene at Manchester United is far from optimal, dealing with an everlasting takeover bid, in the market to sign a new striker but are far off from matching any demands for either Harry Kane, Viktor Osimhen or Rasmus Hojlund, and David De Gea’s contract renewal wasn’t given the green light after the Spaniard accepted a drastic wage decrease.

Manchester United cannot afford to burn any bridges at the moment as a huge wave of uncertainty clouds this transfer market. Andre Onana is being linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the Champions League finalists, Inter, are only willing to accept offers of at least €50 to let the Cameroonian keeper leave. The club is not shy to splash the cash in the transfer window as we witnessed a year ago, signing Antony for £100m, but this time around due to the takeover bid, things are different. United only have a transfer budget of £100m and with half of that kitty used to fund Mount’s arrival and possibly Andre Onana, there are no funds to purchase a striker.
