The FIFA World Cup always brings forward some hugely talented players that we might not have heard of before, and that is what makes these major tournaments so enjoyable and exciting to see. Every player gives their all for their country and for the prospect that they might move clubs and improve their career. A good example of a squad that might surprise us all is the Zambia team, who will be making their debut in the World Cup.

Who exactly are the participants of Group C?

SPAIN

Similar to the men’s football team, the women have a very good team but are not always that successful in terms of winning trophies. This will be the third appearance for the Spanish women’s squad in a FIFA World Cup, and their best-ever finish was in the last edition in 2019 when they reached the round of 16.

In the Euro 2022, there was a lot of hype surrounding the Spanish camp; many tipped them as the favourites to go all the way and create history, especially after the incredible run of wins leading up to the tournament. Unfortunately, injuries to key players such as Jennifer Hermoso and Alexia Putellas dented their hopes and dreams. They took the lead against England – who eventually won the tournament and gave them a good run for their money but eventually, Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway crushed Spain’s hopes.

This time around, the expectations are not as high as they were before the Euro, but still, the potential is there to be exploited, and head coach Jorge Vilda will be looking to get beyond the Round of 16 and hopefully cause some upsets. We are pricing Spain at 3.70 to reach the final.

COSTA RICA

Las Ticas will be making their second appearance in the FIFA World Cup, with the first being in 2015. In their debut appearance, they did not manage to get past the group stages, and this time around it might be somewhat similar with both Spain and Japan in their group. Performances haven’t been great recently, with their last official win coming in a friendly on 11th October 2022. The first two games will prove to be crucial if they can take away some points that would prove to be crucial for their fight to get into the knockout stage.

The South American outfit making it to the semi-finals at 47.00.

ZAMBIA

The Zambia Women’s National football team came in third in the African Cup of Nations, and for this heroic achievement, they were awarded with a place in the FIFA World Cup group stage. This will be the first time that the Copper Queens features in a major tournament after pioneering the idea of women’s football in Africa. Going back to Australia for a major tournament will bring Zambia fond memories as in 2008, they managed to win the Homeless World Cup, which was hosted in Melbourne, Australia.

The debutants will be playing Republic of Ireland in the days leading up to the tournament as a warm-up, and that should give them a great indication of where their chances lie. Bruce Mwape has been in charge of the team since 2018, and Barbra Banda will look to add to her already impressive goal tally of 22 at the young age of just 23.

They face a huge challenge to make it out of the group and at 31.00 to reach the semi-finals.

JAPAN

The 2011 FIFA World Cup Champions are keen on making a good impression in Australia after being tipped to be in decline ever since their heroic display in Germany. The key player that will cause the most damage for opposing team will be the Tottenham Hotspurs player Mana Iwabuchi who has 37 goals for the National team, an outstanding return considering she is only 30-years of age.

Japan are currently leading the race to win the group, with their chances of reaching the final currently valued at 11.00
