JASON MCATEER’S GERMANY VS ENGLAND PREVIEW

JASON MCATEER’S GERMANY VS ENGLAND PREVIEW

Germany

The England vs Germany game is quite intriguing.

In my Round of 16 preview, I’ve mentioned how impressed I’ve been with how the Germans have gone about things. I was going to say that it will be a step up in quality for Germany to play England, but I don’t think it is.

The group they were in with France and Portugal will help them deal with this scenario. They’ve had to hit the ground running. They’ve had to play well, or they’d have been out of the group, which would have been another disaster for Joachim Low – certainly after their last World Cup.

Germany are on it. Their mental state is solid.

England

Although they ended up as group winners, England have kind of limped through the group stage.

They weren’t convincing against Scotland – perhaps the home crowd didn’t help as much as they thought they would. Even in their other game against the Czech Republic, although they got the victory, I didn’t think they were outstanding.

I said at the beginning of the tournament; I think England’s biggest problem is Gareth Southgate. I don’t think he knows his strongest team. Even after the last three games, I don’t think he’s convinced on who to start. He’s changed his full backs, his centre-half, his wide players, and we’ve also seen a change in the middle of the park. As consistency goes, it’s not quite worked out for Gareth Southgate. As I said, they’ve limped through, which isn’t great form to go into a clash against a team that has already faced France and Portugal and come through a scrap with Hungary.

England team prediction

If you take Mason Mount out of the equation, it frees up Jack Grealish playing. I still can’t figure out why Phil Foden wasn’t on against the Czech Republic – if it was a knock or just a change of tactics. Whether he comes back into it this Tuesday will remain to be seen. The back five will pick itself. Gareth Southgate will want that consistency this time around. I’d like to see Jordan Henderson in the team with Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice, but maybe that’s too negative.

As far as the front three goes, you’ve got to play Harry Kane. To take him out of the team for this game would be a mistake. There’s so much talk around Harry Kane at the moment. Is he being distracted with transfer talk? Or maybe his poor form is due to the way he’s being asked to play for England? Harry Kane is quality, and he needs to play. If he gets an opportunity in front of goal, he’ll take it. So in that respect, you’ve got to play him.

Bukayo Saka did himself no harm playing on the right, but I think you’ve got to go with Jack Grealish left, Phil Foden right, and Harry Kane up top if they want a result against the Germans.

England vs Germany – Score prediction

For the England vs Germany I’m going to predict…penalties…only joking!

I’m going to predict a 90-minute game with Germany running out 2-1 winners against England
