Football can be considered one of the most loved sports across the world. Be it schools, gyms, streets, beaches or playgrounds; you’ll be able to spot a football match wherever you look.
The history of football goes back to medieval times, but modern football truly began in 19th century Britain. Independent public schools like Winchester, Eton and Charterhouse took up the game as a winter sport, with each school having its own rules. This made it difficult for public schoolboys to continue playing once they entered university.
To tackle this, the University of Cambridge attempted to regulate and codify football rules in 1843. While, at first, these were not universally accepted, by 1877, the associations of Britain agreed upon a universal code.
It was not long before football became a professional sport, with different leagues began being organised all over Europe by the early 20th century. As there was no international organisation at the time, football association representatives from Spain, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands came together to create the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). This newly founded association went on to host some of the most renowned events of the year in all of sports, such as the World Cup.
When kicking off your international football betting adventure, knowing what events are currently occurring is the first step, so let’s go through some of the most significant international football leagues to help you get started.
We obviously had to start off with the World Cup. This international football tournament is contested by members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). It has been held every four years since the 1930s, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, as it was cancelled due to the Second World War. With the current format, teams go through a qualification phase that takes place over the preceding three years to determine which teams move onto the competition phase. During this stage of the tournament, 32 teams compete for the championship title.
The UEFA European Championship also referred to as the Euros, is a professional football tournament organised by the Union of European Football Associations. It is contested by men’s national teams of UEFA members and held every four years since 1960. The Euro 2020 competition, though, was postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To not clash with the World Cup, the Euros is scheduled to be held in the even year between World Cup tournaments. As it stands, Germany and Spain are tied with three championship titles each, followed by Italy and France with two. The Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and a few other nations have each secured a win as well.
Copa America is the leading men’s South American football tournament. It is among the oldest international football competitions in the world. While the tournament seeks to crown a reigning champion of South America, North American and Asian teams have also been invited to compete since the 1990s.
The tournament was originally known as the Campeonato Sudamericano de Selecciones until 1967. It hadn’t officially rebranded to Copa América until its 30th edition in 1975. The change of name also brought about a change in format as the point-by-point system was replaced to one similar to that of the FIFA World Cup — group phase followed by knockout rounds.
Now that you are familiar with a few international football events let’s move onto your betting options. Understanding what your betting options are is one of the crucial stepping stones to becoming a football betting wiz, so allow us to give you a brief overview. Keep in mind that different sportsbooks offer different types of bets, so you may not encounter all the same bets all the time. With that said, though, if you have dabbled in other sports like tennis, handball and basketball, you’ll find many similar options.
The match winner or half-time winner bets are a good starting point for those still starting out. They are very straightforward and do not require much market knowledge while at the same time still offer a good nail-biting experience. They may not be the most rewarding wagers compared to others, but they can pay well simply out of entertainment value.
Betting on totals, parlays and handicaps are good choices if you’re looking to take things a step further. They offer good payouts but tend to be on the riskier side, so it is recommended to research the tournament, teams and even individual players to help make more informed decisions.
As you experiment with different wagers, it is important to bear in mind that it is quite easy to get lost in all the fun and excitement international football tournaments bring, so having good bankroll management is key to success.
